With a Halloween Horror Nights ticket and a Universal Studios day ticket, you do get early access to the park after you wait in a holding area from 5:00 pm until they finish setting up for the night.

Haunted Houses For Halloween Horror Nights 2022

There are ten new haunted houses at this year’s Halloween Horror Nights. They are each listed below with details but first some more info on the haunted houses in general.

Peak waiting times for haunted houses seemed to reach between 60 minutes and 90 minutes for the most popular haunted houses. We suggest getting into these ones as early in the night as possible to have the shortest waiting times.

Although ten might not sound like a huge number of haunted houses, it would be pretty impossible or unadvisable to get through all ten in one night. Even with express passes, you still have to wait in lines so getting through every single haunted house and enjoying the other rides and scare zones around the park would be too much for one night.

A lot of wait times were fairly accurate if not overestimated but once inside the haunted houses, the Universal employees are extremely aggressive about staying an inch from the person in front of you regardless of whether or not it ruins your haunted house experience. We were really unhappy about this along with others we talked to, but most just tried to ignore them and enjoy what we all paid for.

There are 10 haunted houses to visit for Halloween Horror Nights 2022.

1. The Weekend: After Hours Nightmare

Based on the album by The Weekend, After Hours, the main attraction haunted house this year is all about the nightmares of the artists mind. It includes creepy characters like mannequins, slashers, and maniac plastic surgeons.

Alongside the Universal Monsters haunted house, The Weekend house is located in the Woody Woodpecker’s Kidzone of the park just before the Simpsons section and just after the Scarecrow: Cursed Soil scare zone.

This is one of the most popular and busy haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights 2022.

2. Halloween

In the Halloween haunted house, you’ll step back into time to the year 1978 in Haddonfield, Illinois. Through this haunted house you will revisit the horror of Michael Myers’ first killing spree, where it all began.

Halloween, along with two others, is located in the left corner, after you walk straight through the gates without making any turns. You’ll pass through the Horrors of Halloween scare zone, and the Sweet Revenge scare zone will be across the street to the right from the entrance of Halloween.

This is another one of the most popular and busy haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights 2022.

3. The Horrors Of Blumhouse

The Horrors of Blumhouse is a combo haunted house featuring themes from the 2020 film Freaky where a teen girl swaps bodies with Vince Vaughn’s serial killer character, and the 2021 movie starring Ethan Hawke, The Black Phone, where a young boy is kidnapped and held in a basement as he receives calls from past victims of the killer on a non functioning phone.

Located where the Fast and Furious ride is normally, The Horrors of Blumhouse is halfway to Diagon Alley. This is another one of the popular and busy haunted houses for Halloween Horror Nights 2022.

4. Universal Monsters: Legends Collide

In the haunted house Universal Monsters: Legends Collide, three legendary monsters (The Wolf Man, Dracula, and The Mummy) battle it out to find the curse breaking amulet they all need.

Tucked back with The Weekend haunted house, Universal Monsters is also in the Woody Woodpecker’s Kidzone of the park just before the Simpsons section and just after the Scarecrow: Cursed Soil scare zone.

This is also one of the more popular and busy haunted houses at Halloween Horror Nights 2022.

5. Spirits Of The Coven

Spirits of the Coven is a 1920s witched themed haunted house made up like an old speakeasy.

Spirits of the Coven is the second haunted house you’ll see if you head straight when entering the park. It will be on the left side after you go through the Horrors of Halloween scare zone and is near the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit rollercoaster.

6. Bugs: Eaten Alive

Set in a futuristic 1950s style home, Bugs: Eaten Alive is exactly how it sounds, a haunted house filled with slimy, creepy crawlers.

Located in the far back right corner of the park, Bugs: Eaten Alive is close to the Men In Black Alien Attack ride and the Halloween Nightmare Fuel Wildfire show.

7. Fiesta de Chupacabras

Set in a Latin American style village, Fiesta de Chupacabras is literally a party celebrating the legend of Chupacabras but tourists are the blood sucking Chupacabras prey.

Fiesta de Chupacabras, and two others, are all located in the left corner near the Sweet Revenge scare zone. If you walk straight through the gates and don’t make any turns, you’ll run right into them.

8. Hellblock Horror

Hellblock Horror is a haunted house set in a prison full of savage and monstrous inmates. Hellblock Horror is the first haunted house you’ll come to after entering the park, and will be on the left side just past the first Universal Studios Store.

9. Dead Man’s Pier: Winter’s Wake

In this wintery New England fishing town, you’ll be chased by the revenge seeking undead fisherman. Dead Man’s Pier, and the two other houses, are located in the left corner near the Sweet Revenge scare zone. If you walk straight through the gates without making any turns, you’ll run right into them.

10. Descendants Of Destruction

In this apocalyptic subway scene of New York City, you’re among the last remaining pieces of humanity but not for long if the blood thirsty mutants find you first. Also in the far back right corner of the park, Descendants of Destruction is off to the right side of the Men In Black Alien Attack ride and the MIB Gear store.

Scare Zones For Halloween Horror Nights 2022

This year there are five new scare zones for Halloween Horror Nights. You can find more details below, but the five zones are Horrors of Halloween, Scarecrow: Cursed Soil, Sweet Revenge, Graveyard: Deadly Unrest, and Conjure the Dark.

There are 5 scare zones to walk through at this years Halloween Horror Nights 2022.

Horrors Of Halloween

The Horrors of Halloween is the first scare zone you’ll see when heading straight into the park and it is kind of the intro to Halloween Horror Nights. The theme for this scare zone is the Pumpkin Lord and his group of creatures.

Scarecrow: Cursed Soil

The theme for Scarecrow: Cursed Soil is an abandoned farm full of revenge seeking scarecrows. It is located on the right side of the lake as you head towards The Weekend and Universal Monsters haunted houses. The walkway here is very narrow and unfortunately Universal employees will yell at you if you stop here to look or take pictures.

Sweet Revenge

Sweet Revenge is the largest scare zone area filled with crazy children turned killers from the candy at Major Sweets’ candy company. It is located back by the Fiesta de Chupacabras, Dead Man’s Pier: Winter’s Wake, and Halloween haunted houses as well as the Revenge of the Mummy rollercoaster ride.

Graveyard: Deadly Unrest

Graveyard: Deadly Unrest is a spirit awakened cemetery on All Hallow’s Eve located towards the front of the park. If you turn right when entering the park instead of going straight through the Horrors of Halloween zone, you’ll run into the Graveyard zone.

Conjure The Dark

Conjure the Dark is the smallest scare zone located on the left side of the lake as you go back towards Diagon Alley. The theme for this zone is an evil sorceress calling dark creatures out on the first All Hallow’s Eve.

Live Shows & Entertainment For Halloween Horror Nights 2022

We typically aren’t huge fans of the shows as some of the ones we’ve seen in the past were quite evil and gross feeling and not just fun Halloween themes but one of the shows is typically held over the lake and this one tends to be better.

We would rather spend most of our time in the houses or riding coasters but below are a few details in case you choose to watch the shows.

The actors and costumes really go all out for HHN at Universal Orlando.

Halloween Nightmare Fuel Wildfire

This is the amphitheater sit down show with pyrotechnics and aerial performers. This is the one we left part way through last year so we choose not to return to it each year. It is located all the way in the back of the of the park by the Bugs: Eaten Alive haunted house and the Men In Black Alien Attack ride. You can use the app to find updated showtimes for each night.

Ghoulish! A Halloween Tale

This show is held on Universal Studios’ Lagoon on the right side of the lake. Unfortunately there is not any seating unless you want to sit on the floor. The entrance to the viewing area is located just before the Scarecrow: Cursed Soil scare zone and across the street from the Mel’s Die-In restaurant and the Dia de los Muertos Bar. Again, you can use the app to find updated showtimes for each night.

Rides Open For Halloween Horror Nights 2022

Typically there are four to five rides open during Halloween Horror Nights but not all of them are open every night during HHN and they don’t all stay open until the 2:00 am closing of HHN.

During the night, the best rides (typically Gringotts and The Mummy) generally reach lines from a 45 minute to 75 minute wait. If it starts raining, all of the indoor rides (all but Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit) will get even busier.

Diagon Alley and Gringotts are the most popular Harry Potter attractions open during HHN.

Halloween Horror Nights happens on the Universal Studios side of the park with the Diagon Alley part of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. You can walk around the whole side of this park but only certain things are open during the Horror Nights.

Revenge Of The Mummy

Revenge of the Mummy is one of the best rides open during Halloween Horror Nights but even though it is an inside ride, it is still a rollercoaster. So if you’re not a fan of fast turns and quick drops, then this one might not be for you. The ride is located behind the Sweet Revenge scare zone, in between the Sahara Traders store and the Halloween Horror Nights Tribute Store.

Harry Potter And The Escape From Gringotts

Another one of the most popular rides open during Halloween Horror Nights is Harry Potter and the Escape From Gringotts located in Diagon Alley. If you get to this ride right when the park opens, you should be able to go through it two or three times without any lines. Later in the night it is one of the busiest rides and it does typically close earlier in the night.

Men In Black Alien Attack

Men In Black is a great interactive ride for those that don’t love rollercoasters. It’s typically not overly packed unless it starts raining. It is located in the far back right side of the park, in between the Diagon Alley and Simpsons areas.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is the only large rollercoaster on the Universal Studios side of the theme park and although it is typically open the entire night, it is the ride that seems to shut down or have delays the most. It will also shut down if it starts raining.

Transformers: The Ride-3D

Transformers is another good ride for those that aren’t fans of rollercoasters. It is an indoor ride that is typically not overly packed during HHN but it was not always open every night of the Horror Nights.

Food & Shopping For Halloween Horror Nights 2022

🍽 During Halloween Horror Nights there are 17 restaurants or cafes open, plus over 20 themed food and drink stalls around the park. Some of those restaurants and cafes include Starbucks, The Leaky Cauldron, Mel’s Die-In, and The Fountain of Fair Fortune where ButterBeer is sold.

🛍 As for shopping, there are 12 shops around the park open during the night including the Halloween Horror Nights Tribute Store. The stores should all remain open during the night and the Universal Studios Store at the entrance of the park will stay open past the park closing if there are still straggler buyers looking for one last Halloween Horror Night souvenir.

Lines for food and drinks can last nearly as long as some of the houses. It's best to eat before or early in the night to avoid waiting.

Healthy & Allergy Friendly Food Inside The Park

Universal is not the best when it comes to severe food allergies or healthy food. Some of there menus online do show when an item is suitable for sensitivities to gluten, dairy, egg, peanut, nut, fish, shellfish, sesame, and soy but again, it’s not great for severe allergies and none of it would be considered healthy.

To avoid any issues, we prefer to eat before going into the park and bring a couple of snacks with us in case we get hungry during the night. Our favorite snack is the organic Truvani chocolate bars. They do contain nuts so its not good for nut allergies but they are gluten free, dairy free, soy free, cane sugar free and more.

If you do decide to eat inside of the park when you visit, be sure to tell the workers or servers about your food allergies so they can make adjustments. Some of the places, like the food stalls, won’t allow any adjustments to the food unless it is for an allergy reason.

Universal Orlando does have some allergy friendly options but not an abundance and not suitable for severe allergies.

Where To Stay For Halloween Horror Nights 2022?

There are certain advantages that come with staying at a Universal Hotel, like special entrances into the park, but they are also a bit more costly than other options around Orlando.

We’ve done both, but we actually prefer to stay at a nearby Marriott Hotel that has a full kitchen inside the room so we can prepare some meals and most importantly have a full size fridge and freezer.

It is also located just on the other side of the interstate, less than 10 minutes away, so it is super easy to get a ride share to the park pretty inexpensively ($12 to $18 on average).

➡️ For those wanting a nice and convenient hotel near Universal Studios, we recommend booking a room here with this TownePlace Suites.

Tips For Halloween Horror Nights 2022

➡️ Get To The Park Early ~ Although the park officially opens at 6:30 pm, if they finish setting up early, they will open up the gates. Both times we visited they let us in at 6:00 pm.

➡️ Get Into The Park Early By Combining HHN With Day Park Tickets ~ When you spend the day at the park and have tickets for Halloween Horror Nights, you get early access to the park for HHN. You have to be inside the Universal Studios side before it closes (which is at 5:00 pm) and then you will be held in an area until they release you close to the haunted houses and the rest of the action.

Don't forget to slow down and enjoy your night out at HHN. Its fun to sit at a bench and people watch, especially in the scare zones.

➡️ Plan Your Night, Especially The First Hour ~ No matter what night you visit, it will be crowded so planning is the best way to take advantage of the whole night. Within the first hour of your visit, choose your top two houses and top two rides and get those done right away. Another strategy is to start at the back of the park as soon as you get into the park.

➡️ Which Rides To Go On First ~ Typically Revenge of the Mummy and Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, are the two busiest rides of the night, although all indoor rides will get busy if it starts raining. In addition to getting through with little to no lines right after the park opens, most rides also close earlier in the night so they are good to get done right away. We’ve headed straight for Gringotts when the park opens on multiple occasions and been able to ride it three times in a row without waiting in any lines.

➡️ Which Haunted Houses To See First ~ The same thing goes for the haunted houses, get to the busiest houses right away so you can get through them without much of a line. The houses change every year so everything is new and worth seeing but the well known themes will be the ones that are typically the busiest: The Weekend: After Hours Nightmare, Halloween, The Horrors of Blumhouse, and Universal Monsters: Legends Collide.

➡️ Don’t Expect Zero Wait Times With A Fast/Express Pass ~ With a cost that goes higher than entrance tickets, you’d think that the Fast or Express Passes gave you full VIP access. It does help out significantly on wait times, but that doesn’t mean that there are zero wait times. One of the nights we visited was a Thursday closer to Halloween and we heard lots of complaints about the extremely long fast pass lanes (up to an hour on some).

➡️ Save The Scare Zones Until Dark ~ The entrance to the park will automatically send you through the Horrors of Halloween scare zone if you head straight but we suggest skipping the rest of the scare zones until it gets dark. They are spookier the darker it gets outside and it is better to do the rides and houses first anyway.

➡️ Don’t Wear Costumes Or Masks ~ Don’t dress up for Halloween Horror Nights or you will not be allowed in. Only actors and staff of Universal Studios are permitted to be in costume during the night.

➡️ Don’t Try To Scare Or Yell At Actors ~ This seems like an obvious tip but we watched a couple of people get escorted out of the scare zones for trying to scare the actors and even one that yelled in an actors face trying to be funny. They will remove you from the park if you do anything like this.

➡️ No Photos Or Videos Inside Of The Houses ~ They are very strict about no photos or no videos inside of the haunted houses so avoid getting yelled at by keeping them put away in your pockets or bags.

➡️ Remember To Drink Plenty Of Water ~ Although Halloween Horror Nights is held at night and during the fall season, it’s still hot in Orlando, Florida. With the hot and humid temperatures (especially in tightly packed lines) and the fog from the smoke machines, don’t forget to drink plenty of water. You can get free cups of water at certain places like the ButterBeer shop in Diagon Alley, instead of buying the expensive bottles available in stalls and restaurants.

Don't forget to drink plenty of water at HHN. Its pretty hot most days and you don't want to get dehydrated.

➡️ Don’t Wait To Eat Inside Of The Park If You Have Severe Food Allergies ~ Universal Studios does offer some allergy friendly options but they are typically not suitable for those with severe allergies or healthy lifestyles. We’ve always been better off eating before going into the park and bringing a few snacks in a bag with us inside of the park (our favorite organic snack is the chocolate Truvani bar).

➡️ Download The App Ahead Of Time To Know Where You’re Going ~ Universal Studios has an app you can download with features for Halloween Horror Nights. The best reasons to download this are for the map and for the somewhat updated wait times for each attraction. They do have paper maps available once inside the park, but the the app is the best way to see if rides or houses close, have waits or any other changes.

➡️ Wear Comfortable Shoes ~ Make sure you dress comfortably for the night. Walking around isn’t as bad but standing around waiting in lines kills the feet and back during the seven to eight hour night.

➡️ Make The Time To Take A Break ~ It’s hard to take a break when you’re trying to get in as much as possible during the night but it makes the experience much better if you slow down a little and enjoy it. The last time we went, we took a lot more time to sit on some of the benches, watch people in the scare zones and eat a snack or get a drink. It was so much better and less stressful that way.

Without express passes, we’ve typically been able to get through around four haunted houses, three rides, all five scare zones and a show. With this schedule, we didn’t have much time to sit around and relax, it was mostly nonstop moving.

With express passes, we’ve gotten through much more with seven haunted houses, two rides, all five scare zones and a show. During that night, we had plenty of time to sit and rest, and shop or eat when we wanted to. It was much more enjoyable this way.
